Wednesday, November 7, 2007 at 10:19AM I've already told you about the lady who lived with my mom. At that time, I didn't understand much about Alzheimer's. I knew she had been diagnosed but basically I knew little to nothing else. I really thought, in my immature world, that all elderly people had a problem with their memory. And, yes, I know that most of us, as we age, we start to forget the little things. That's an entirely different world from Alzheimer's. Alzheimer suffers have bigger fish to fry than simply forgetting where they put their glasses.
The good news is that there is a lot that you and I can do to benefit those who do suffer. November 13, 2007 is National Memory Screening Day. It is an effort by the Alzheimer's Foundation of America to encourage appropriate intervention. You can check out nationalmemoryscreening.org and find the Memory Screening nearest you. A Memory Screening is the first step toward intervention and care for those who may be at risk. The site also offers much more helpful information to those who are interested. Those early screenings are key for early detection of the disease and other related illnesses.
The site lists man helpful succesful aging tips and you can learn these and then spread the word to others who might not ever read the site. It is important to work for intervention and prevention as well as help care for those who already suffer. And, if you find that you can help with a donation, you can check out the site and possible get a holiday gift for someone.
