Monday, July 23, 2007 at 11:48AM The BP Whiting Refinery tends to stir a lot of emotion and excitement in some people. However, if you are not aware of the facts, you could easily be misled. Let me see if I can help with the path toward understanding. First and foremost, BP plans to spend more than $3 billion to modernize the Whiting Refiniery so that it can process additional heavy crude oil from Canada which is a secure and reliable source.
The water coming from the refinery and being put into Lake Michigan is treated water that is more than 99% pure water and not sludge. The sludge has its own set of treatment guidelines and these are followed. Also, a new water discharge allows the average ammonia discharge to increase but at levels half of those that the federal guidelines actually allow.
There is no harm to the people or the enviornment and you can rest assured that BP is doing what they can to assure continuous improvement. You may be like me and wonder what this Whiting Refiniery actually does. And, that is, they produce gasoline, diesel and jet fuel for the daily humdrum activities of our lives.
You can read the fact sheet on this particular issue yourself here.
